What is Glutathione? Why do you need it?
Glutathione has three primary health benefits: it promotes detoxification, it provides antioxidant protection and it fortifies the immune system. Glutathione has been clinically studied with over 80,000 published studies. It is now known that glutathione plays a central role in detoxifying the body and managing overall health. Your body’s natural glutathione levels fluctuate constantly throughout the day, being lowest in the morning and decreasing as you age. Exposure to toxins, ingested and environmental chemicals and even things as healthy as exercise can all increase free radicals and ramp up your body’s need for glutathione.
We all know that a preventive remedy is the best route to better health; it’s more effective to treat the cause than deal with the consequences. A milligram of prevention is better than a kilogram of cure.
The amount of glutathione delivered by a supplement is important, but the real test is whether it provides the body with a useable, clinical form of glutathione. As a pharmacologist and one who personally has been taking glutathione supplementally for years, I wanted to make sure I was getting all my body needed. Glutathione levels are key to the proper function and the vibrant life of every cell in the body. I call glutathione “the body’s master antioxidant” because it is the master molecule for longevity.
From clinical research studies, I learned there are two effective ways to improve glutathione levels. Both provide a stable delivery system and assure the person of therapeutic levels. For years, I’ve been taking both forms of glutathione supplements.
One form of glutathione is a mixture of special amino acids and minerals that increase bodily glutathione. In other words, the supplement supplies the materials the body needs to build its own glutathione. The formula is rather complex, but the elements involved are very simple: L- Glutamate + L-Glycine + L-Glutamine + L-Cystine (not L-Cysteine) + Selenium. The building process takes place inside the cells. Glutathione is made within every cell of the body and there are trillions of cells needing glutathione. But, as I got deeper into the research, I realized that even the best efforts to provide building block molecules and co-factors may not effectively optimize glutathione production in all cases. There are times when chronic problems or physiology upsets can alter enzyme functions in ways that hinder glutathione production or glutathione metabolism, despite excellent nutrient intake.
Thus, I kept studying and found out that there is a preformed glutathione on the market called Setria glutathione that is helpful even when the body is unable to make its own. Setria is a branded form of reduced glutathione that is manufactured using a patented fermentation process. For decades, the prevailing belief of clinicians and researchers has been that oral glutathione has little to no systemic availability. Setria found the way to make oral glutathione bioavailable in a reduced smaller size. Dr. John Richie and his colleagues at Penn State
University did the clinical trials and found that the Setria form of glutathione increased significantly from baseline in whole blood and erythrocytes (red blood cells). And they found that this oral supplementation of the actual glutathione did not inhibit the body’s production of glutathione. This is an extremely important finding, as some experts were speculating that glutathione supplementation may suppress the body’s natural ability to build glutathione.
The conclusion of this landmark study was that oral supplementation of glutathione is an effective way to increase body stores of glutathione, decrease oxidative stress and support immune function without suppressing anything.
I have personally been taking both forms of glutathione nutrition for years. And when Modexus said they’d like to launch a glutathione product, I offered them my pharmacological expertise on how no one on the world market had formulated a product with the building block blend and the patented Setria reduced glutathione. Modexus did it and now I’m a happy camper who can swallow two capsules every morning and get all the glutathione my body needs to replenish what wear and tear has taken out!
